Pictured Rocks Cruise Boat Tours Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore U S. National Park Service

pictured rocks boat cruise

The passengers on the right got the better views for the first half, but we had the prime viewing on the way back, which worked out well for our particular cruise because the lighting was better then. I paid close attention to the captain’s narration on the way out because I wasn’t expecting him to redo it as we headed back, but that turned out to be unnecessary because he repeated almost all the information. In addition to the painted rocks there are unique formations like chapel rock, miners castle, and indian head rock. At the falls, the boat makes a U-turn and heads back to Munising.

Take the Sunset Cruise for Bold Colors & Serene Waters

Luckily, on the day we visited, there were groups of kayakers near several of the scenic areas, and their presence helped to give the cliffs a sense of scale. The Pictured Rocks get their name from the visible striping in the rock layers and mineral deposits left on the surface from spring water that leaks out forming colorful streaks. Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore contains many pristine lakes and streams that are threatened by unwelcome visitors—invasive aquatic plants and animals. These non-native organisms can negatively impact wildlife habitat, upset the food chain, and out-compete native species. Hitchhikers spread from lake to lake by boat, trailer and fishing equipment, and expelled bilge water. Or try to reel in a fishing line clogged with spiny water fleas.

The dock for the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore Grand Island boat ride is about a ¼ mile walk from the restaurant, through Paddler’s Village and along the lake shore. Golf cart rides are offered to those who are not able to make the trek easily, which was perfect for a portion of the group that we were traveling with. There was also a small cash-only snack bar where you could get cans of pop, bottles of water, and light snacks. Note that you are allowed to bring your own snacks and drinks on board (no alcohol) so you can pack your favorites with you. Grand Portal is the tallest portion of the cliffs here, and the archway was once large enough that decent sized boats could sail through it.

Pictured Rocks Cruises Boat Tour

However, our captain was incredibly knowledgeable about Pictured Rocks and gave us tidbits of information and fun facts as we were on our cruise. Every time we end up in the Upper Peninsula, I try my hardest to eat my weight in fresh whitefish (how can you not?!). The Duck Pond Eatery & Beer Garden did not disappoint, in fact, they offer whitefish appetizers, sandwiches, tacos, fish and chips, and a whitefish chowder.

Whoever was picking the designs for the shirts completely shared my taste and I would’ve happily bought at least 80% of the store. My fiance and I each had a terrible time choosing just one shirt each. Usually I’ll hunt around and maybe find a design or two that I really like, but there were great ones everywhere here, and they really weren’t expensive for a gift shop. My fiance has a great love for trees that are surviving in completely unreasonable conditions, so his favorite rock formation was an easy call. Chapel Rock was once connected to the cliff by a natural stone archway, and the roots from the tree pictured here grew on top of it. When the arch collapsed leaving Chapel Rock freestanding, the roots remained and the tree has continued to survive with its lifeline to the mainland.

Your Pictured Rocks boat tour begins with a quick trip through the harbor out toward the national lakeshore. There isn’t a ton to see for the first few minutes, and the boat traveled at a pretty decent clip here. Because we were on the outside deck, it got pretty windy and I was a little chilly.

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore stretches for fifteen miles along the Upper Peninsula’s Lake Superior shoreline. With naturally colorful cliffs that tower as high as 200 feet above the water, it’s a spectacular sight that’s a must-visit on any trip to the UP. While there are some scenic drive and hiking trails running through the park, the best way to really appreciate the cliffs is from a Pictured Rocks tour boat. A National Parks concessionaire called Pictured Rocks Cruises operates numerous sailings 7 days a week from mid-May to mid-October, and I absolutely loved our tour. This website is using a security service to protect itself from online attacks. There are several actions that could trigger this block including submitting a certain word or phrase, a SQL command or malformed data.

What to bring for a Pictured Rocks boat tour

But the low light conditions didn't diminish the beauty of the rocks and we all thoroughly enjoyed the experience and are looking forward to a return visit for a daylight cruise or a mid-summer evening cruise on a clear evening. Very little of the National Lakeshore is accessible by car so most visitors prefer to spend their visit on a Pictured Rocks tour boat. Viewing the colorful cliffs from out on the water gives you a much better view than you would have from the land anyway. The color of the water near the cliffs is unmatched, nearly Caribbean blue in color. While there are some tours offered during the daytime hours, I would highly recommend the sunset cruise if you love bold colors and the serene feel of the evening. Being up on the boat, it’s hard to get a good perspective on the size of them.

I was glad I had heeded the operators’ advice and brought a sweatshirt even though temps were in the upper 70s that day. The rest of the tour was at a much slower pace and I was quite comfy without the hoodie. Chapel Cove is a small inlet surrounded by cliffs on three sides. The water was incredibly calm that day, so the captain said he was going to take us up close to see it. I wasn’t expecting him to pull us all the way inside the cove though.

The road to the Duck Pond Eatery & Beer Garden takes you right through charming Christmas, Michigan where you can see Santa every month of the year. We’ve slowly been making our way through the Upper Peninsula as the kids get older and can handle longer car rides. This time, we left home later at night, so we boondocked at the Walmart in Gaylord before making the rest of the drive to Munising in the morning.

Note that there were accommodations made for a woman walking with a cane, and she and her group were allowed to board first so they could make it into the lower deck cabin without fighting the masses. Whether you want to snowmobile, view some of the most beautiful fall foliage in America, or relax on a magical beach, Munising’s four seasons have something for everyone. Munising offers countless lodging options to choose from, including boutique hotels, small family-owned motels, and secluded cottages and cabins. SAILBOATS AND PADDLEBOARDSLake Superior - Small sailboats and paddleboards can be launched into Munising Bay at Sand Point Beach. Munising Bay is a good place for sailing and paddleboarding since it is generally a more sheltered area. Larger boats should use the municipal boat ramps listed above to enter Lake Superior.Inland Lakes - Little Beaver Lake, Beaver Lake, and Grand Sable Lake are also suitable for small sailboats and paddleboards. The photos below are but a small sample of the unique landscapes of Mother Nature. Our captain guide was fantastic – not only did they offer information in a very casual way, but they were incredibly flexible when it came to taking photos and videos.

After eating, we took a stroll around the property while waiting for our scheduled Pictured Rocks boat tour. In the parking lot of the Duck Pond Eatery & Beer Garden is the office to schedule tours – guided boat and kayak – or book a stay at their Paddler’s Village. There is plenty of free parking available in a dirt lot near the ticket office, so I wouldn’t anticipate having trouble parking your car. As noted before, it’s recommended to arrive at least 45 minutes before your scheduled departure if you want to snag one of the good seats. If you opt for the Spray Falls tour like we did, the final major landmark you’ll see is the namesake waterfall itself.

Review: Riding BOLT, the First Roller Coaster on a Cruise Ship

cruise with roller coaster

This roller coaster is unique in that you have a throttle handle and a “boost” button. Let the throttle turn back forward to decrease speed (you’ll still move and won’t stop on the track). When it’s time to actually ride the roller coaster, just make your way to the stairs at the base of the coaster and check-in with the staff. They will confirm your reservation and then send you up the stairs to ride. I got off of the ride a bit shaky and full of adrenaline (as you can see in the Bolt video we filmed). Construction of the thrill ride is slated for completion in September, followed by a series of test runs planned for October, just two months before the line’s third Excel-class ship enters service.

BOLT: Ultimate Sea Coaster

In second place came the SkyRide feature found on the Vista-class cruise ships, also from Carnival Cruise Line. SkyRide is an elevated 800-foot-long track on the open deck that guests can pedal of speed up to 18 miles per hour at 150 feet above sea level. SkyRide has already won the Best Cruise Ship Feature four times, in 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019. The landmark cruise creation features an 800-foot-long track marked with twists, dips and a hairpin turn around the ship’s tunnel, industry news site Cruise Critic reported. The attraction is positioned approximately 20 feet above the ship’s 18th deck — specifically, above a miniature golf course and jogging track — and 187 feet above sea level, according to Attractions Magazine.

The Ultimate Guide to the Ultimate Sea Rollercoaster

The minimum height requirement is 52 inches (4 feet, 4 inches) and the maximum is 77 inches (6 feet, 5 inches). Stand on the scale next to the stairway up to the ride, and a green light will go on if you're an acceptable weight. Measure your height against the thick line on the height chart. Is Carnival's Bolt roller coaster actually the best top-deck, heart-thumping attraction on a ship? I'm aboard the second voyage of Carnival Celebration, the second ship in the Carnival fleet (and the entire cruise industry) to boast a roller coaster ride, and I made it my mission to find out.

Give me one or two pina coladas on a weeklong cruise, and I'm good to go. However, the massively creative options on the menus at both the Golden Mermaid and Dr. Inks, Ph.D., bars are absolutely worth a shoutout. On the wall above Dr. Inks, window-shaped screens provide a show for anyone passing through the length of the Currents promenade area. Programming rotates between underwater adventures, nature scenes and even artwork produced by passengers and kids from St. Jude's Children's Hospital.

Make your way up a deck, and you'll find the Limelight Lounge, which serves as a secondary performance space and trivia outpost. Unless you specifically request your cabin steward to come at night for turndown service instead of earlier in the day, your room will be made up in the morning. Hang the "SNOOZIN'" card on the outside of your door, and no one will bother you — but your room won't be cleaned that day. Fully accessible rooms are stair-free, flat-threshold cabins, which offer wider (32-inch) doorways, turning space and bathrooms equipped with grab bars and shower seats. Speaking of the bed, it was exceptionally comfortable, and I was excited to find that the TV across from it had a sizable selection of free movies (as well as newer releases for a fee). The TV also allows you to watch select live channels and shipboard programming and to check your onboard bill.

With calming seafoam green and yellow decor alongside extras like Elemis toiletries, bathrobes and slippers, these are some of the most relaxing cabins on any ship. These guests also receive priority spa appointments and free access to fitness classes and the onboard thermal suite. Haute cuisine meets atmosphere at Fahrenheit 555™, a dining experience that stands toe-to-toe with some of the best steakhouses on land. Ours features your choice of steak cuts, lobster, lamb and more… and inside, there’s even a full bar that pours great pairings. These are the building blocks of an amazing experience — delectable elements that combine with great service to offer an evening to remember. Good find — the relaxation pool is an exclusive retreat to paradise, and the bar becomes a hot dance spot when the sun goes down.

Carnival Announces Third Roller Coaster at Sea - Cruise Industry News

Carnival Announces Third Roller Coaster at Sea.

You’re really not going to find a roller coaster like BOLT on land. If there’s a downside, it’s that the ride is over before you know it… not to mention before the driver really understands the controls! The other potential downside is that if you’ve got hair, there’s a good chance you’re going to look like a bit of a hot mess. There’s a minimum speed, but I’m pretty sure even that is fast… not to mention scary, given the height of the track. Once you have your reservations in hand and your closed-toe shoes on your feet, you will go up to deck 18 and check in with one of the Carnival attendants, who will be holding a tablet with the reservations.

All this said, we recommend checking Carnival's website before sailing for up-to-date requirements. A few other forms of identification, such as a passport card, also are acceptable. Of the performances, I most enjoyed two main-theater shows that are also found on some other ships in the fleet. Activities here are less structured, and participants can come and go as they please. Back inside, Deck 6's Piano Bar is where passengers can order a tipple while an onboard pianist tickles the ivories.

How long does the ride on BOLT last?

Operating on an 800-foot track, the ride carries two all-electric, two-person cars, with one rider controlling the speed of the car, which can reach 40 miles per hour. The track drops, twists, and turns 187 feet above the water line, and riders can experience a zero-gravity sensation. Passengers link credit cards to their onboard accounts or put up a set amount of cash to charge against, using their keycards as a means of making purchases. The only time you might want to have some bills handy is for tipping your room steward, bartenders, room service delivery people, luggage porters or shore excursion guides.

Better comfort, lighting and storage all spring from a deep understanding we've developed around how people actually use their staterooms… and how small changes to the room add up to make the experience that much better. (Enough USB charging ports for everybody’s stuff? Oh yes!) Thoughtful, guest-centric design is how we do it… and all this in-room convenience comes paired with a fresh new look. Ok, a few places — get ready for six distinct onboard zones featuring brand-new experiences for spectacularly getting down to food, drink and fun. The ride consists of electric-powered, single-occupant race cars that can reach speeds of 30 MPH, plus a turbo-boost that allows even more speed.

Instead, the Bolt roller coaster has two two-person Jet Ski-style vehicles that travel around the track independently. The "driver" (i.e., the rider in front) can actually control the speed of the roller coaster, both by turning a handlebar throttle and by pressing a button for a boost of speed. The rider in the back, however, simply enjoys the ride (and the screaming) with no responsibilities. While any roller coaster at sea is impressive, it is still bound by the limitations of fitting on the cruise ship.

However, the service was generally excellent, with an exceedingly friendly crew. Ships start as sketches, then come deck plans… and we get building from there. Check the decks on Mardi Gras® and plan all the fun you're going to have on board. Somebody at Carnival knows just what you need, and it's pretty much exactly the Serenity Adult-Only Retreat™. Look, you'll still be on the same ship as the kids, the hoopla, and all the Carnival-style excitement... But you could easily forget, because when you're at Serenity you could not be further from it all.

Super casual items such as cutoff jeans, men's sleeveless shirts, T-shirts and gym shorts are supposedly not permitted, but I saw plenty of them in the dining rooms during dinnertime on Carnival Jubilee. Smoking (including electronic cigarettes) is allowed but only in designated outdoor areas on Deck 8 mid-ship on the starboard side. Smoking is also allowed on the starboard side of the casino, but it's for cigarettes only. All types of smoking are forbidden in cabins and on cabin balconies.

In the teppanyaki tradition — and Carnival’s tradition of fun — expect an interactive, satisfying meal full of surprise and delicious delight. The ride, which is free to guests, debuted on Harmony of the Seas in 2016 and is now offered on three more ships, including Oasis of the Seas, Symphony of the Seas, and Wonder of the Seas. Ultimate Abyss will also be featured onboard Utopia of the Seas when she enters service in July 2024. Guests pay $15 per person to experience two laps around the 800-foot track, which is located on the ships’ open deck at the Ultimate Playground zone. Cruise Radio prioritizes well-balanced cruise news coverage and accurate reporting, paired with ship reviews and tips. I saw no reason not to go for broke so I gunned the engine as soon as my car leaped into motion.

This nautically themed outpost is next to a popular access point to the outer decks, so the only downside is that you might be blasted with hot air while your drink is being made. During my visit, I ordered a pound of stone crab claws in garlic butter (market price) with red beans and rice ($3) and a brie bowl ($6). My only complaint is that, apart from a claw cracker, there were no other tools available to get to the crab meat. (I asked.) My waiter had no bibs or wet wipes to offer, which left me a bit messy afterward. As a sucker for soft-serve ice cream, I was a frequent visitor to the three soft-serve ice cream and frozen yogurt machines on decks 8, 16 and 17. My pick from Guy's is the Chilius Maximus — an 80/20 ground chuck patty with cheese, chili, onion rings and barbecue sauce.

The space is simply packed with tables — so much so that there were only about two inches between my table and the one next to me, even though I was dining alone. It then took nearly 10 minutes for a waiter to bring me water and another 10 before someone came to take my order. On Carnival Jubilee, the Lido Marketplace on Deck 16 is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner daily, but I found it largely uninspired and lacking in variety. The French toast I had for breakfast and the mahi mahi I had for dinner were tasty, but there are definitely better no-charge venues on board. In my experience, waiters were diligent in asking about dietary requirements and restrictions. However, it was disappointing to see that many menus weren't marked with specific options for vegetarians, vegans and people who can't eat gluten.

As the start of the dry season, January yields the least amount of rain all year. While climates will vary depending on which region you’re sailing, expect temperatures to range from the upper 80s during the day to the mid-60s in the evening. If you’re cruising to ports like Aruba or Bonaire in the Southern Caribbean, you’ll likely experience the warmest conditions, as they’re the closest to the equator. Take advantage of the unique winter climates by jet skiing along one of Aruba’s pristine beaches or strolling through the lush botanical gardens in Martinique. 10 Food & Beverage Tips For Your Carnival Cruise

can you bring food on a cruise

Royal Caribbean cruise passengers can bring non-perishable prepackaged food in limited quantities. For the most part, cruise lines don’t provide exact limits on how much food you can bring on. However, cruise lines such as Royal Caribbean and Carnival Cruise Line describe “limitations” on the quantity of food you can bring onboard without expressly saying what those limits are. In most cases, bringing homemade food on a cruise is not permitted due to health and safety regulations.

Additionally, pre-packaged non-perishable food items like beef jerky and dried fruit are also allowed. These beverages must be packed in carry-on (not checked) bags or luggage. Always check your cruise line policy on bringing water bottles onboard, as this has been changing in recent years.

In addition, there are typically bars and lounges where you can purchase alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. Yes, you can bring food on a cruise, but there are certain limitations and restrictions. Cruise lines generally allow passengers to bring small quantities of nonperishable food items, such as snacks or pre-packaged foods, for personal consumption in their staterooms. However, it’s important to note that bringing your own food to the ship’s dining areas or buffet is typically not allowed. Major cruise lines like Carnival, Royal Caribbean, and Norwegian allow guests to bring non-perishable pre-packaged food in limited quantities on their ships.

Are there any restrictions on bringing food on a cruise?

In fact, your waiter will introduce themselves and then ask if you have any allergies or restrictions on what you can eat. This helps them ensure they have any special needs covered. If you require bringing something with you on the ship to meet special diet requirements, feel free to call the cruise line ahead of your cruise and let them know. They can help you make any arrangements that you might need in order to bring it on.

Packaged and Non-Perishable Foods

Don’t think you can get around those policies by simply shopping at ports of call. If you pick up a bottle at port, most cruise lines require you to turn it over to their staff, who will store it for you until the ship returns to its final destination. You’ll find that other cruise lines have similar policies that allow you to bring on food and snacks. Be sure not to bring any perishable food or meat products, as those are prohibited items. You do not need to declare that you have food, and it is generally fine to pack your prepackaged food in either your carry-on or your checked luggage. The good news is you are allowed to bring some food and drink on your cruise, but there is a limit on how much and what sort you can bring.

Others have small “grab-and-go” eateries that offer sandwiches or pizza that you can get something to eat whether it is 2 p.m. As well, room service is always available if it is late and you don’t feel like leaving the room. You’ll have lots of options in both the buffet and in dining rooms and restaurants. That means if you eat at the buffet, dining room, or other free restaurant, then gratuity is already covered.

Steakhouse selections in the dining room – Carnival’s Steakhouse is truly one of the best restaurants at sea. I’ve dined there at least 10 times and I’ve never had a bad meal. My husband and I have often joked that we would eat there every night if we could … well, now we feasibly could with Steakhouse Selections in the dining room. For a $20 surcharge, anyone can upgrade their meal to include a 9-ounce filet mignon, a 1.5-pound Maine lobster, a 14-ounce New York strip steak, or surf and turf.

Are there any restrictions on where we can go on the boat during the Santorini sunset tour?

You will see the volcano and the clear Aegean Sea. A cruise at sunset is the best way to see the beauty of Santorini. Watch the sunset over the iconic caldera. It makes a stunning display of colors in the sky. The alternative location is opposite Akrotiri village, which is equally impressive. My name is Pavlos and I come from the beautiful country called Greece.

I spent a wonderful afternoon in Pyrgos but didn’t stay for a Pyrgos sunset. One of the best things to do in Santorini is to wander along the caldera rim, particularly in Fira (you could always follow it the 10 km or so to Oia the next day). The area around the domed St Stylianos Church gets very interesting at sunset, as the church glows warm colours as the light gets lower. The small castle ruin draws hundreds of people every night, so logistically the only way to get a front row spot is to arrive up to TWO HOURS early. By the time the sun is ready to sink over the horizon, you’ll have several hundred fellow visitors for company.

Others may have swimming or snorkeling. Ask for the cruise’s duration before booking. Join a traditional fishing trip off the coast of Santorini and watch the sunset out at sea. Benefit from the expert knowledge of a local captain and crew and help prepare a fresh fish dinner or snorkel as your meal is cooked. The Santorini lighthouse is at the end of the Akrotiri peninsula in the south-western corner of the island.

Just a few minutes’ walk from the main square in Firostefani, the viewpoint is directly above the iconic church with its white bellcote and blue dome. Oia (pronounced EE-a) is the most famous Santorini sunset location. You’ll find that many people leave after the sun sets, but they’re often missing the best part of the show – the afterglow. The fiery dusky sky can be even more spectacular as the sunset itself, so it pays to stick around until the lights are turned on, and indeed afterwards. Count on being there an hour after sunset, when only a few hardcore enthusiasts and photographers will be left. Santorini caldera is such a great place to watch the sunset because the elements are there to photograph so much more than ‘just’ the sunset.

Best Sunset Cruises In Santorini

The only factor to consider when selecting your preferred Sunset boat cruise is whether you would like to book a Private cruise or not. Most boats and catamarans will have 2 or 3 bathrooms. They are always clean and well maintained. A Private Catamaran Cruise to the hot springs and around the Santorini caldera is one of my favorite things to do in Greece. Take a look up the hill to St John’s Roman Catholic Cathedral, its richly coloured dome and tower magnificent in the late light.

The seating type can vary by the tour provider. It depends on the specific boat they use. Fira is the capital of Santorini and one of the most popular tourist destinations on the island.

Before booking, check the tour provider’s reputation. It’s also good to check travel agencies. You can also try discount websites online.

Departures leave towards Thirsassi, from which you can enjoy the views from the comfort of the catamaran as it sails past the island. With swimming spots in selected spots, you’ll spend the evening enjoying watching the Santorini sunset from your luxury catamaran. A sunset cruise in Santorini is another amazing experience, drifting along the waters of the caldera between the volcanic islands. Greet your complimentary hotel transfer before being whisked to the Port of Akrotiri.

Also, bring a light jacket or sweater. It can get cool in the evening, especially at sunset. They have the specific info on the boat for the sunset trip in Santorini. Some providers may also offer a cash bar or a limited drink menu. It’s best to ask the tour provider for specific info. They can inform you about the cost of the cruise and whether drinks are included.

Each island shares stunning natural beauty, colorful cultures and rich histories making cruising the best way to experience these enchanting locales. Bora Bora's cuisine brings a mix of French, Asian and Tahitian flavors to the local seafood bounty. Try firi firi, a Tahitian donut that's also made with the ever-present coconut milk. Don't leave without trying the French Polynesian specialty, poisson cru, a ceviche of Tahitian ahi tuna in coconut milk and lime juice. If you're new to Backroads active cruise trips, there are a few things you need to know. Although our average group size is larger than a typical Backroads tour, our ship-based trips feel smaller and much more intimate than a typical cruise.
